How to bathe your puppy correctly step by step

Your puppy's first bath can be a positive or a traumatic experience, depending on how you do it. With the right technique, the right product and plenty of patience, you'll turn it into something your dog looks forward to calmly.

When is the right time for the first bath?

Veterinarians recommend waiting until your puppy is at least 8 weeks old and, preferably, until they have received their first vaccines (around 12 weeks). Before that, puppies don't regulate their body temperature well and a bath can cause hypothermia.

If your puppy gets very dirty before three months, you can clean specific spots with a warm damp towel without getting them completely wet.

Preparing the bathing area

Preparation: what you need before you start

  • Puppy-specific shampoo with neutral pH, without harsh fragrances or parabens. Never use adult or human shampoo.
  • A non-slip mat at the bottom of the tub or sink so they don't slide.
  • Soft microfiber towels, at least two.
  • A hair dryer on a low or warm setting.
  • The right brush for their coat type.
  • Treats or small snacks for positive reinforcement.

Steps to bathe your puppy correctly

1

Brush before the bath

Remove knots and loose dirt from the coat before getting it wet. If knots get wet, they tighten further and become hard to undo. Plus, brushing beforehand relaxes the puppy.

2

Use warm water, never hot or cold

The water should be between 35 and 38 °C. Wet them slowly starting with the legs and body. Leave the head for last and avoid getting water directly into the eyes and ears.

3

Apply the shampoo with a gentle massage

Distribute the shampoo over the whole body with gentle circular movements. The massage not only cleans but also helps the puppy feel safe and relaxed. Pay attention to the armpits, chest and areas where dirt builds up.

4

Rinse very well

Shampoo residue on the skin causes irritation and itching. Rinse until the water runs completely clean. This step is just as important as the wash itself.

5

Dry first with a towel, then with the dryer

Wrap them in the towel and press gently to absorb the water (don't rub vigorously, as it can create knots and stress them). Then use the dryer on a warm-low setting, starting at the tail and moving toward the head. Keep the dryer in constant motion.

Key tips to make the bath positive

  • Speak in a calm tone throughout the process. Your voice directly affects the puppy's stress level.
  • Reward with snacks before, during and after the bath to create positive associations.
  • The first bath shouldn't last more than 5 minutes. Over time you can extend it.
  • Never scold if they get scared or try to escape. Stop, calm them down and try again.
  • Recommended frequency: every 3-4 weeks for short-haired puppies and every 2-3 weeks for long-haired ones.

Additional care during the bath

Take advantage of bath time to check: the condition of the skin (spots, redness, parasites), the ears (no bad smell or dark discharge), the nails (whether they need trimming) and the eyes (no excessive discharge). This habit of regular checking helps you detect health problems in time.
